Levy Information
With Washington State education revenue reductions,
approving our local levy is more important than ever!
A YES vote is a vote for quality basic education in Bremerton schools!
What is a School Support Levy?
A levy is a property tax that supports educational programs and operations at all Bremerton schools. Every four years, Bremerton School District asks voters to renew the support levy. This support levy is NOT a new tax, but instead a RENEWAL of the existing School Support Levy.
What are Levy Equalization Funds?
The state gives equalization funds to districts with property values less than the state average. Bremerton receives levy equalization funds. But, districts can only collect the equalization funds if the voters approve the levy. The levy and levy equalization funds make up 20.6% of Bremerton School District's general operational budget. The state is considering cutting levy equalization funds which would be devastating to Bremerton.
Why do schools need levy dollars?
State and Federal revenues do not fully fund current education costs and additional reductions are expected during this legislative session. Local levies bridge the gap between our state's inadequate funding of BASIC education and the ACTUAL day-to-day cost of providing quality education for Bremerton students. Levy dollars no longer provide "extras" but instead help fund basic education.
How will the levy dollars be used?
The funds will help maintain educational costs for classroom needs, school support, transportation, equipment replacement, building maintenance, equipment replacement, technology and student activities.
What does this mean for my property taxes?
Voters approve a maxim dollar amount to be collected though property taxes. The fixed amount is shared by all Bremerton District taxpayers based on their assessed property values.
What levy amount is Bremerton School District asking for?
An average of $10,700,00. will be collected each year for four years.
It is estimated that the rate will be $2.50 per $1,000. of assessed value. The actual rate collected varies depending on total property values. In past years, we have actually seen a decrease in our property rate.
